Police Officers Warn Residents about Scams

Local police agencies are warning residents about various scams hitting the area.

Officials say a government agency will not contact you and ask for personal information. Additionally, no government agency will ask you to pay for anything with a gift card.  This is a scam.

Representatives from the Social Security Administration, Medicare, or any other U.S., State, or local government agency will not call if there is a problem with a policy or an account. Do not give out any information to these callers.  If there are questions about a policy or an account, call that agency directly.

Older residents have been getting phone calls from people acting like a relative needing to be bailed out of jail.  If there is a question about a certain arrest, hang up and call the local Sheriff’s Department to verify the arrest.  Never give out banking or credit card information over the phone.

It’s important to remember that government officials carry credentials with them, like those working with the Census Bureau. They are going door-to-door to ensure all residents in a household are counted.

If you have a question about a suspected scam call, call the Sheriff’s Department to report the incident.
